ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY

Founded on September 1, 1985, St Mary Magdalen Church has always reached out to the neighborhood where God has placed us. The parish sponsors the Columbia University Orthodox Christian Fellowship, and Fr. Yakov also serves as Orthodox Chaplain at Columbia. The members of our parish tend to be Orthodox who have fallen away from active participation in the Faith who choose to return to active Orthodoxy (often because of the parish's outreach programs and exclusive use of English in the services) or adult converts from a variety of backgrounds (including atheism, Islam, Judaism, or other non-Orthodox Christian Churches). Founded as a mission, the parish was granted full parish status in January 1995. Although we met in rented space for over 20 years, our community has proven itself a viable and sustainable cell of the Body of Christ on Manhattan's Upper West Side. We have recently found a permanent home for the Church so that we may expand our activities and schedule of services. Due to the large number of students who join our parish, learn to live as Orthodox Christians, and who then go on to work or study throughout the world, we trust that the Orthodox Church as a whole benefits from our ministry, as well as our local neighborhood. We ask everyone to remember us in their prayers as we journey together into the blessed Kingdom of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

SCHEDULE OF SERVICES

Our community meets for Great Vespers on Saturdays at 6:30 PM and Divine Liturgy on Sundays at 10:00 AM.  Feast days are celebrated on the eve of the feast  with a Veseperal Divine Liturgy. 

On Wednesday evenings in Great Lent, we also meet for the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts at 7:00 PM.

Confessions are heard before Sunday Divine Liturgy and at other times by appointment.
