About Orthodoxy ~~~~
The word Orthodox comes from two
Greek words: Orthos (Orqos), which originally meant Straight
and thus came to mean Right, True, and Correct, and Dogma (Dogma),
which means Belief (from the verb Dokhw, to think). Orthodox
Christianity, therefore, is true belief, belief in the one source of
all Truth: Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, who created us; became
man; and suffered, died, and rose from the dead to save us from the
corruption of sin and to restore our fallen humanity.
Orthodox Christianity is the living faith taught by Christ to his
disciples and passed down by them and their successors through
Scripture, worship, images, and writings. It is nothing more
or less than working out our salvation in fear and trembling, with
Christ’s help, both through the inner life of the soul and
the external life and worship of the Christian community.
The riches of Orthodoxy are many, and hard to summarize.
There is no substitute for experiencing firsthand the Divine Liturgy,
where the People of God come together to unite in prayer and communion,
and we invite you to come and see. For those who have never
attended an Orthodox Service before, we offer handout, which gives a
description of our church space and a synopsis of the Liturgy
itself. All are welcome!
